Friday: En Route

Depart the U.S.A. on your flight to Cairo, Egypt.

Saturday: Cairo

Arrival Cairo; meeting, assistance and transfer to your hotel. Rest of the day is at leisure.

Sunday:  Cairo

Morning drive see the Three Great Pyramids, the oldest surviving structures built by man; enter one of the Pyramids. Stand in awe at the magnificent Sphinx carved out of a single piece of stone, guarding the Giza plateau. Try a camel ride before continuing to the new, spectacular, must-see Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) (subject to museum opening), the largest archaeological museum in the world with objects covering 5000 years of ancient Egyptian civilization. GEM is host to over 50,000 artifacts, 3500 of which belong to the treasures of the famous King Tutankhamen. After lunch at a local restaurant, continue the tour to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. The Museum presents a rich, deep insight into Egyptian culture through the ages; enter the fascinating Mummy Room housing all 22 Mummies. Return to Cairo for overnight. (B.L)

Monday:  Cairo / Luxor

NILE CRUISE 

Transfer to the airport for an early morning flight to Luxor. Arrive and transfer to your Nile Cruise for a 5 Day/4 Night Cruise. After lunch, visit the Avenue of the Sphinxes and the imposing Temple of Luxor with its grand colonnades, standing alone in the heart of town. Continue to the vast Karnak Temple-Complex, built by generations of Pharaohs over a 2000-year period.  Evening, enjoy on board entertainment featuring belly dancing and an Egyptian folkloric show. Tuesday: Luxor / Edfu

NILE CRUISE

After breakfast, visit the Valley of the Kings containing the secretive tombs of New Kingdom Pharaohs. On to the beautifully terraced Temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari. Pass the famed Colossi of Memnon, standing nearly 70 feet tall. Sails to Edfu. Balance of the afternoon at leisure. Join the crew for a welcome cocktail before dinner. Overnight in Edfu. (B.L.D)

Wednesday: Edfu / Kom Ombo/Aswan

NILE CRUISE

Early morning set sail to Edfu. Visit the Temple of Edfu, the best preserved of all large Egyptian Temples, built over 180 year period. In the afternoon arrive in Kom Ombo, a hill town over-looking the banks of the Nile. Visit the Greco-Roman Temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to Horus, the Sun God and Sobek, the Crocodile God. This evening, a traditional fun-filled Galabeya party. Overnight in Aswan. (B.L.D)

Thursday: Aswan

NILE CRUISE

Morning visit to the Aswan High Dam and the granite quarries where the stone for the ancient monuments and modern dam of Aswan were cut. View the gigantic, unfinished Obelisk of Queen Hatshepsut. Continue by motorboat to the beautiful island of Philae to see the exquisite, gleaming white Temple of Philae. After lunch, sail on a traditional Egyptian “felucca” (sailboat) which glides along the Nile, passing by Lord Kitchener’s Island and the dramatic white marble Aga Khan Mausoleum. Nubian Show this evening after dinner on board. Overnight in Aswan. (B.L.D)

 

Friday: Aswan / Abu Simbel / Cairo

After disembarkation, board a short flight together with your guide from Aswan to the mighty Sun Temple of Abu Simbel. Flanked by four giant stone statues of Ramses II. The temple was reclaimed from the dam and reconstructed in its present and unforgettable location. Return flight to Cairo where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Overnight in Cairo.  (B)

Saturday: Cairo

Morning depart to Old Cairo and visit the Mosque of Mohammed Ali at the Citadel of Saladin. Then drive to visit the beautiful Coptic Church of St. Sergius, where Jesus and the Holy Family stayed after fleeing Jerusalem. Continue to the 10th century A.D. Ben Ezra Synagogue (subject to permission), the oldest in Egypt. Proceed to the bustling Khan el-Khalili Bazaar, where shopping is an exotic experience. Afternoon is at leisure.  This evening, enjoy dinner out. (B.D)

Sunday: Cairo / Alexandria

After breakfast, drive from Cairo to Alexandria. Arrive in Alexandria; drive along the dramatic 15-mile waterfront Corniche, the city’s crescent running along the eastern harbor. Visit the Alexandria National Museum with more than 1800 archaeological artifacts dated from Prehistoric and Pharaonic times to Coptic and Islamic era; stop at Pompey’s Pillar and the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa. Continue on to the Library of Alexandria, a spectacularly designed homage to its ancient namesake.  Lunch included in Alexandria. Overnight at your hotel.  (B.L)

Monday: Alexandria / Cairo

Departing Alexandria, we’ll first visit magnificent Montazah Palace Gardens  (subject to restoration completion) and then the Royal Jewelry Museum.  On to the Fort of Qaitbay, erected on the northern tip of Eastern Port on the site of the ancient Pharos of Alexandria. Return to Cairo for overnight.  (B)

Tuesday: Cairo

Depart this morning to explore ancient Memphis, with its colossal statue of Ramses II, founded in 3100BC as the first capital of the newly united kingdom of Upper and Lower Egypt, and her vast and astounding necropolis of Sakkara, where architecture was born. See the first large buildings built in hewn stone in history.  Stand before the soaring centerpiece Step Pyramid of Pharaoh Zoser, the first stone structure to appear in the world. Continue for lunch before you visit the Pyramid of Dahshur, a fascinating link between the first Pyramid of Sakkara and the mighty Pyramid of Giza. Explore the imposing Red Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid. Return to Cairo for overnight.  (B.L)
